Like most other writers on the planet, I too, have harbored fantasies of an alternate universe, void of responsibilities, where I had little more to do every day than write. Yes, I have heard of writing residency programs, where a selected few are chosen to spend anywhere from two to six weeks living and working with other artists at remote, lakeside cabins, with daily meals cooked and delivered to their rooms. I imagined one day I might apply to some of those programs, cross my fingers, and maybe even be accepted. Yet, never in my wildest dreams would I have believed the opportunity to create my own "writing residency" of sorts -- in my favorite city, no less -- would fall into my lap and become a reality.
On May 1st, I will be heading to Brooklyn where I will be living in my friend Claire's apartment and doing nothing other than writing Shot: The Book for an ENTIRE MONTH! That's right: no waiting tables in the evenings, no copious social engagements, no hosting weekly Bible study groups in my home. READ: The raging extrovert that I am will be alone for the first time in her life. The thought is both daunting and exhilarating at the same time.
Even my husband will not be coming to visit, as he will be in California engaging in a beautiful adventure all his own. He and several of his guy friends will be camping and riding bicycles down the coast -- from the Oregon border all the way to San Francisco. Ever since we became a couple almost four years ago (wow, the time flies!) Paul and I have never been apart for more than a few days, and I know I will miss him dearly.
But more than anything, I am excited. To write. To pray. To glean inspiration from the city I adore, and to make some great headway on both the book proposal and the second half of the book itself. To all of you who donated on Kickstarter and helped make this possible, I cannot thank you enough.
If you'd like to keep up with my daily NYC adventures, I'll be positing regularly on Facebook, and weekly on this blog. New York City, here we come!
